The Prosecutor General's Office ordered taking legal action over the irregularities in using public money committed by the former administration of the Ministry of the Interior. There were opened six legal cases. Nobody was yet declared suspect or charged, Info-Prim Neo reports. “All the former senior officials of the Ministry of the Interior will be questioned,” the head of the General Investigations Division Iurie Garaba told a news conference on February 26. He said among those who will be quizzed are former Minister of the Interior Gheorghe Papu, his deputies, former police commissioner of Chisinau Vladimir Botnari and a number of Communist MPs. The audit carried out by the Audit Office at the Ministry of the Interior a month ago showed the former administration of the institution paid rent for the then ruling Communists Party's office in Botanica district for several years, said prosecutor Alexandru Nichita, the head of the Financial and Economic Investigations Division. The lease was signed by the former head of the Ministry's Operative Services Division Ghenadie Cosovan. The Ministry also paid for the maintenance of the car used by the Communist MP Iurie Eriomin. The damage caused was estimated at 800,000 lei. The prosecutors also said they will examine the circumstances in which the administrator of the state-run company Dinamo-MA Oleg Ermachikov took out a loan of 100,000 lei and then another one of 180,000 lei from his wife at an interest rate of 21% and 24% a year. The loans were not repaid even if the company had money and the interest rose to 132,000 lei. The former administration of the Ministry is also suspected of purchasing a Lexus and several mobile phones at exaggerated prices as well as guns. The prosecutors will investigate how the 1.392,3 million lei provided by the Council of Europe for organizing conferences and seminars was spent. It was determined that the Ministry does not have expenditure estimates confirming that such events were held. It was also established that the former administration of the General Police Commissariat and of the Regiment “Scut” favored an economic entity in setting up a parking lot to the detriment of a state-run company. The six legal cases were opened over misuse of power and misappropriation. The damage caused to the state budget was assessed at over 68 million lei.
