Six arrested in uranium smuggling case

Six persons on Tuesday were arrested in central Chisinau on suspicion of being involved in smuggling uranium, the Prosecutor General's Office said in a press release, Info-Prim Neo reports. From the preliminary information possessed by the prosecutors it appears that the radioactive material was smuggled into Moldova with the intention to sell it to organized crime groups both in the country and from abroad. The operation was performed with the support of the Interior Ministry's Anti-Fraud Department. The suspects face charges for both possession and smuggling of radioactive substances, each carrying fines of up to 800 conventional units and jail terms of up to 5 and 10 years, respectively.
