Situation on national roads is under control, police and road workers
The situation on the national roads is under control and there are no blocked roads, Minister of the Interior Victor Catana and Minister of Transport and Road Infrastructure Anatol Salaru told a news conference on Wednesday, Info-Prim Neo reports.
”In such emergencies as heavy snowfalls, the Ministry of the Interior gets involved in solving problems caused by the unfavorable weather,” Victor Catana said. “The traffic police are on the alert and work round the clock.”
According to Catana, 129 minor road accidents have happened in the municipality of Chisinau during the last 24 hours. No casualties were reported, but there are great traffic jams in Chisinau. One person was killed and eight injured in a traffic accident in Edinet district.
Victor Catana said the accidents are mainly caused by the drivers who did not change the tires or whose vehicles have defective braking or lighting systems.
He also said that he discussed the situation with Prime Minister Vlad Filat and they agreed that the Government will ask the Parliament to modify the legislation and oblige the drivers to equip the vehicles with all the necessary things.
Minister of Transport and Road Infrastructure Anatol Salaru said the national roads are passable and there are no major problems. The traffic police set up posts on a number of difficult road sections and help the large vehicles to cross the given portions.
”A number of 240 vehicles are removing the snow and spreading antiskid material on the national roads at present,” Salaru said. “But this number is not enough to clean all the roads. Besides, many of the machines are old.”
Salaru also said that in 2010, the Government will purchase snow removal equipment worth 60,000 lei and plans to replace all the snowplows during the next three years.
About 40,600 tonnes of sand and 20,000 tonnes of salt have been stored for use this year. This antiskid material is sufficient to remove the glazed frost all over the country, Salaru said.
