Situation in Gagauzia is a failure of policies pursued by Chisinau, opinion

The situation in the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia is a failure of the policies pursued by Chisinau, said the former president of the Constitutional Court Alexandru Tănase. According to him, in time the central authorities have been too indulgent towards the representatives of Comrat and this approach should be now reviewed. For their part, representatives of the ruling party suggest that the victory of a pro-Russian candidate in Gagauzia was predictable at a time when Russia never stooped pulling the strings from behind so as to keep its influence over the autonomous region, IPN reports.

Two days ago, representatives of the National Anticorruption Center seized the electoral rolls used in the Bashkan election in Gagauzia on suspicion that the lists included dead persons and that other persons voted in the name of these persons and of people who are outside the country.

“Maybe there are suspicions about particular irregularities in the registers of voters, as regards the inclusion of persons who were not in the country, but we cannot say that the vote was in favor of one or another candidate as there is the secrecy of the ballot. All the signals transmitted by the observers, all the comments made by mates with the status of observer from the media show that there were no incidents that could have massively affected the secrecy of the ballot,” CEC deputy head Pavel Postica stated in the program “Emphasis on Today” on TVR Moldova channel.

PAS MP Oazu Nantoi said the tensions in Gagauzia confirm the fact that the ATU is an instrument of the Kremlin, which is used to destabilize the situation in Moldova.

“This autonomous unit regularly becomes an intervention tool of the Kremlin, which is used to destabilize the political situation in the Republic of Moldova. It is enough to mention the so-called referendum of February 2014 in which Irina Vlah and Igor Dodon were involved. It is enough to note how brutally the Russia Federation intervened on March 22, 2015, when Irina Vlah was declared a winner in the competition for the post of Bashkan. It wasn’t a struggle as all the other candidates didn’t have any chance when the Kremlin pointed the finger at her. What is happening now in ATU Gagauzia was absolutely predictable in terms of the existence of a candidate guided by the Kremlin, who is faithful to the Kremlin,” stated Oazu Nantoi.

“The situation in the Gagauz region can be described as a political and moral failure of the policies pursued by Chisinau during these three years. If we objectively look at the situation, Chisinau never has had a clear attitude or polity towards ATU Gagauzia. All the violations of the law were tolerated. Now that they try to enforce the law, new orchestrated protests with territorial secession threats and blackmail appeared. I think time has come to assess the autonomous unit to see to what extent it achieved its objectives. It should be noted that conserving its culture, language and particularities was one of the major goals of the autonomous unit. Ultimately, after 30 years, they are even more russified. Chisinau is the one that pays for this situation as the autonomous region exists also because the central government subsidizes the developments there,” stated the ex-president of the Constitutional Court Alexandru Tănase.

According to the Comrat Electoral Commission, the Shor Party’s representative Yevgenia Gutsul won the gubernatorial elections in Gagauz with a score of 27,374 votes. Her challenger Grigorii Uzun, who was supported by the Party of Socialists, gained 24,926 votes.
