Situation at Banca de Economii to be discussed with IMF mission

The situation at Banca de Economii (BEM) will be discussed with the mission of the International Monetary Fund. In a program on Pro TV channel, Prime Minister Vlad Filat said the IMF mission is expected to come to Chisinau at the end of February, Info-Prim Neo reports. “A part of the discussions with the IMF will focus on Banca de Economii, not in order to determine figures and situations, but in order to provide solutions so that we move on,” stated the Premier. Vlad Filat said the measures that are to be taken are strictly coordinated with the Government, the National Bank, and the partners from the IMF. “In cooperation with all the partners – the Government, the National Bank, and the IMF – we will identify solutions to the problems faced by Banca de Economii. At the same time, the state institutions, including the Prosecutor General’s Office, are to bring things in order and deal with the problems that appeared,” he stated. As to the IMF report saying that the BEM is close to bankruptcy, Vlad Filat said he didn’t receive such a report. “I cannot comment on unofficial data. I know what’s going on at the bank because I’m the chairman of the financial stability committee. I can comment on a document when I receive it officially,” he stated. The situation at the only financial institution controlled by the state became tense after the publication of reports showing that in 2012 the bank sustained losses of 313 million lei.
