SIS has a new director

Parliament voted in favor of appointing Alexandru Musteață as director of the Security and Intelligence Service (SIS) for a five-year term. The draft decision was adopted by the votes of 54 PAS MPs. Also today, Alexandru Musteața took an oath of office before the MPs, IPN reports.

Alexandru Musteață said that he will analyze the way in which SIS works and will review the security system of the Republic of Moldova. The new SIS head noted that the tapping of phone conversations without the consent of the Prosecutor’s Office is an illegally that should be punished.

Since September 2021, Alexandru Musteață had served as an adviser on anticorruption policies to Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilița and as a member of the Central Election Commission. Alexandru Musteață had also worked for Soros Foundation Moldova for seven years. He graduated from the “Perspective” University, the Faculty of International Relations, in 2010 and in 2011-2013 studied national security politics at the University of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. In 2018, he studied at the Faculty of Law in Riga, while in 2020-2021 - at the College of Europe.

Alexandru Musteață replaced Alexandr Esaulenco whose resignation was accepted in the same Parliament sitting.
