SIS director appointed

SIS deputy director Alexandru Esaulenco has been promoted by Parliament to head Moldova’s security and intelligence agency for a term of 5 years. Artur Gumeniuc, previously presidential counselor on national security and defense, has been appointed to replace Esaulenco as deputy director.

During question time before the confirmation vote, MP Igor Vremea (PDM) asked Esaulenco whether he encountered in his work elements of hybrid warfare in Moldova and what his actions would be to counter them. Esaulenco responded that “elements of hybrid warfare are taking shape, but SIS has an intelligent approach to managing these risks which could affect national security.”

Asked by Lilian Carp (ACUM/PAS) about whether he had any role in the controversial extradition of six Turkish citizens last September, Esaulenco said he was running a directorate that had no involvement. He added that SIS started an inquiry and its results would be available to Parliament in 9 days.

Also today, Parliament voted to change the procedure of how SIS directors are appointed and dismissed. Candidates will be nominated by the President and confirmed by Parliament, whereas previously nominations were made by groups of at least 10 MPs.
