Several separate groups of people gathered simultaneously outside the Government building on Wednesday, March 9, to protest, Info-Prim Neo reports. Former workers of Glodeni-Zahar factory, of Moldcarton factory, drivers from Orhei and people from Stauceni were among the protesters. The people from Stauceni headed by several local councilors demanded the withdrawal of an allegedly illegal authorization of construction on a green area. According to independent councilor Ion Nastas, 300 trees were cut on March 5 in Stauceni on the place where a block of apartments should be built. He accused those responsible of “corruption and protectionism” demanded that the law should be respected. Simple people complained about the noise from the construction site. Drivers from Orhei demanded their jobs back. Serghei Panico said he served the town for 17 years, but in 2008 an illegal tender contest was organized in favor of Mayor Ion Stratulat. All the drivers were re-employed by the winner, who is considered a friend of the mayor. Another driver, Fiodor Mihailov, says many went abroad to gain money for buying a minibus and now are forced to subordinate with their private transport to an agent’s “severe restrictions”. Workers of Glodeni sugar factory requested their wages to be paid and penal charges against trade union leaders to be dropped. According to Vasile Guleac, on March 4, 700 of the 2500 tons of sugar, sequestered in order avoid illegal sale, were taken out of the factory. Maria Mutiuc said she and others brought camps and would stay as much as necessary. She worked at the factory for 34 years and is 2 years short of retirement. Gheorghe Rusu, president of Moldcarton trade union, claims the Government did nothing since the last protests on February 16, despite its promises. On February 16, workers of Glodeni-Zahar and Moldcarton protested outside the Government building, demanding to be paid their wages. The Government promised to create commissions that would examine both cases.
