A silence march entitled “Without fear”, designed to support the LGBT community, will be held in Chisinau on May 22. The participants will march in silence from the square of the shopping center Unic up to the Great National Assembly Square. The organizers of the event, representatives of the Information Center “Genderdoc-M, in a news conference at IPN on May 19 said that when they reach the destination, the marchers will form a square and will mark the liberation from fear by a symbolic gesture.
“Genderdoc-M” projects coordinator Angela Frolov said the solidarity march forms part of a series of events staged within the festival of the LGBT community “Moldova Pride 2016”. The march is held within the organization’s campaign “Without fear”, which is aimed at sensitizing the people to the rights of the members of the LGBT community in Moldova by initiating fearless speeches.
Angela Frolov noted that the slogan “Without fear” was chosen for the campaign and the march because society in Moldova is full of fears. The march is designed to unite all the people who want to overcome their fears.
Political officer of the EU Delegation to Moldova Mindaugas Kacerauskis said the EU declares its firm support for the principles of equality and respect for the dignity of all the people, regardless of their sexual orientation and gender. Despite the progress made in this regard in about 80 countries, the relations between persons of the same sex are still punished criminally. Representatives of the EU Delegation will take part in the silence march.
Political officer of the U.S. Embassy in Chisinau Paul G. Garddon said the United States supports the rights and freedoms of all the citizens, regardless of ethnicity, religion, sexual identity, etc. He noted he will also take part in the event.
Journalist Natalia Morari stated that she will participate in the march because she fears to be a journalist who criticizes in the Republic of Moldova and because she wants to be near the people who fear to say that they are slightly different and that they love in a slightly different way.
Music producer Ala Dontu said this march is a first sign showing that the Moldovan people can protest in a different way. “The verb ‘to keep silent’ in this context means not tolerating the situation, but accepting it so as to overcome it forever,” she stated, calling on everyone to join the march and to overcome their complexes.
The march to support the LGBT community is staged the fourth consecutive year. It starts at 12 noon.
