Silence march in memory of 2009 events to be staged on April 7

The people are urged to come to the Great National Assembly Square in Chisinau on April 7 to commemorate the events that happened in the center of Chisinau seven years ago. A group of young people, among whom members of the Platform “Dignity and Truth”, public activists and representatives of student organizations and of the local public administration, in a news conference at IPN said they will mount a silence march to render homage to the peaceful participants in the tragic events of April 7, 2009 and to sensitize the law enforcement bodies so that such events do not repeat.

The organizers called on the people to come to the central square of Chisinau with a candle and a flower in memory of Valeriu Boboc, who died during the protests. “We invite all the young people who took part in those events, who were maltreated and beaten and who went through the corridors of death to come and state their opinions and tell us about those moments of terror,” said Platform member Inga Grigoriu.

Public activist Sergiu Tofilat said the sacrifice made then should not be neglected. “No matter who governs, the voice of the young people must be heard whenever necessary, including by protests,” he stated.

Deputy head of the National Council of Student Organizations of Moldova Mihaela Popescu called on the students and trade union leaders to mobilize and take part in the event scheduled for April 7. “We are those who should secure our future by non-violence, by avoiding events similar to those of April 7, by verticality, courage, dignity and self-determination,” she said.

Platform member Dinu Plangau said the police now include the same persons as those who ill-treated young people in the Great National Assembly Square seven years ago. Moreover, some of them were promoted to higher posts. “Such a thing cannot leave us indifferent, and not only the young people. This is defiance of the whole society, of the democratic and moral norms,” he stated.

Member Liviu Vovc noted that it will be soon seven years of those tragic events, but the persons who provoked the protests haven’t been yet identified. “The young people were intimidated in the hope that nobody will rise up against the criminal regime for another 20-30 years. Seven years was yet enough for the self-confidence to regenerate. Let’s take to the streets to seek justice and take our country back,” said Liviu Vovc.

Independent local councilor of Copceac village of Stefan Voda district Dan Popovic called upon the representatives of the local public administration to unite for a common cause. “The political-economic and social situation in the Republic of Moldova is very serious and we will be those who will have to provide explanations to our parents and children in time,” he stated.

The demonstrators are to come together in the central square of Chisinau at 4pm. The column will go on a march to the Ministry of the Interior and then to the Parliament Building. Afterward, the people will return to the square to observe a moment’s silence in memory of Valeriu Boboc.
