Significance of Barroso’s visit was best expressed by Voronin, opinion
The significance of European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso’s visit to Chisinau was best expressed by the Communist leader Vladimir Voronin, who said that it represented political and moral support offered by the highest representative of the European bureaucracy to the Alliance for European Integration, considers political analyst Anatol Taranu, who heads the Political Consultancy and Analysis Institute “Politicon”.
“Mister Voronin was very precise in his assessments. The real significance of this visit is to provide support to the alliance. The visit will indisputably have consequences for Moldova. It will mean greater openness for the European funds, while the support means the propelling of Moldova on the path to European integration,” Anatol Taranu stated for Info-Prim Neo.
Political analyst Igor Botan shares this opinion. He said that Jose Manuel Barroso’s visit is a visit of support to Moldova. “The EU has a special strategy for the Eastern Partnership countries and it is normal for a high-ranking official to obtain first-hand information about the state of affairs in this region,” said Igor Botan, director of the Association for Participatory Democracy (ADEPT).
Moldova is recognized by the EU as a country that made the most important progress on the path to European integration, said Igor Botan. “That’s why the message of the visit is a symbolic one, a message of support and encouragement, and I think it will have resonance in society. It depends on the Moldovan authorities how they will use the declared support of the EU,” said the ADEPT director.
Igor Botan said that Jose Manuel Barroso is from Portugal, a country that passed through very difficult periods, and he understands that the political struggle is an absolutely normal thing. The analyst regrets that the power and the opposition in Moldova are antagonist, but believes that this situation can be overcome by dialogue, including with society.
