The administration of the Republic of Moldova enjoys the EU’s full openness and support, including at parliamentary level, MEP Siegfried Mureșan said in a news conference held jointly in Chisinau with Mihail Popșoi – both co-chairmen of the EU-Moldova Parliamentary Association Committee, IPN reports.
The current session of the Committee that preceded the co-chairpersons’ meeting with the press is due to the memorandum of understanding that was signed recently in Brussels by Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu and the President of the European Parliament David-Maria Sassoli. The document is to give new dimensions to the interaction between the two legislative bodies.
The session centered on the whole range of subjects of major interest. “We took stock of the difficulties and of the small results we achieved at economic and social levels despite the scarcities. In particular, we ascertained the enormous support for the Republic of Moldova following the obtaining of a stable pro-European majority in Parliament. We need to fully realize the potential of the document signed by Igor Grosu and David-Maria Sassoli in Brussels,” stated Mihai Popșoi. He noted the memorandum is aimed at ensuring greater professionalism among Moldovan lawmakers and better interaction, including between the commissions of the two bodies.
Speaking about the necessity of giving content and life to the memorandum of understanding, MEP Siegfried Mureșan said the challenges, preoccupations, concerns are the same for Moldova and for the EU. “We should defend the European values, struggle for stronger justice and cope with the economic situation, including the inflation shock, and should ensure energy security and deal with the rise in prices and other phenomena that arise outside the EU,” he said.
The MEP also referred to other concerns that should be subject to a coordinated approach, such as the safety of citizens, border security, transition to green and digitized economy. “We will work closer in these areas at parliamentary level too,” stated Siegfried Mureșan.
