The political pressure exerted on the Constitutional Court risks isolating Moldova internationally. The European Parliament will not remain an observer to such constitutional breaches and will ensure that current and future assistance to Moldova is re-evaluated, said the Head of EU-Moldova Parliamentary Association Committee Siegfried Mureșan, being quoted by IPN.
The MEP stated the EU is watching how the Republic of Moldova’s Constitutional Court is undergoing enormous pressure to deliver a desired verdict on 7 May in favor of a Russian loan. “As the independence of the Constitutional Court is in danger, we must unconditionally support it.”
Siegfried Mureșan noted the EU is watching how the Constitutional Court’s judges are being harassed, blackmailed or defamed. “Nobody, neither a President nor a Prime Minister or a ruling party, should be able to oblige the court to follow political orders instead of the supreme law.”
“The EU is watching how the backbone of an independent judiciary - the Prosecution, the anti-corruption centru - remain idle or even give a hand of support to the current authorities to turn the independence of the Constitutional Court into a parody and the institution into a valuable object sold on at an auction to the highest bidder.
“The attack on the Constitutional Court is deplorable and unacceptable. The desperation of President Dodon and PSRM to subjugate the Moldovans with a precarious Russian loan only to win the next elections has reached all limits. The efforts to politicize the Moldovan Constitutional Court will have very negative consequences on the EU-Moldova relation.”
The MEP made the statement following the recent developments in the Republic of Moldova with regards to the ongoing pressure on the Constitutional Court and the call of Domnica Manole, the President of the Moldovan Constitutional Court to all EU and international institutions. A day ago, Domnica Manole said the situation is extremely difficult and can affect the work of the CC. According to her, the tense situation that was created artificially around the CC affects the functionality of the rule of law in Moldova.
