Siegfried Mureșan: It is inadmissible for group of MPs to attack CC only because they are afraid of elections

Romanian MEP Siegfried Mureșan said the Parliament’s April 23 decisions to remove Domnica Manole from the post of CC judge and to name Boris Lupașcu in her place are inadmissible attacks on the Constitutional Court. Such attacks on the independence of the Constitutional Court endanger the micro-financial assistance announced earlier by the EU, while the respect for the rule of law is the zero condition imposed by the EU in its relationship with the Republic of Moldova, IPN reports.

Siegfried Mureșan said the decision to annul the appointment of Domnica Manole as a CC judge is an attack on the independence of the Constitutional Court. The EU will never tolerate such abuses.

“When a group of MPs change the laws only because they want to save their own seats of MP, this is a violation of the rule of law. It is inadmissible for a group of MPs to attack the state institutions, to attack the Constitutional Court only because they are afraid of the people’s vote,” the Romanian MEP stated in the program “Emphasis on Today” on TVR Moldova channel.

According to him, by such actions the parliamentary majority in Chisinau fully discredited itself and lost the European partners’ confidence. Therefore, snap parliamentary elections should be held.

“There are now two priorities in the relationship between the European Union and the Republic of Moldova – restoration of the rule of law and holding of snap parliamentary elections. I wouldn’t have spoken about snap elections if I hadn’t clearly seen what’s happening in the Republic of Moldova. There is no Government that would enjoy the support of a transparent, functional parliamentary majority and that would be credible before the European Union,” stated Siegfried Mureșan.

He noted the abuses committed in the recent period by the PSRM-Shor majority endanger the financial assistance that the EU is ready to offer to Moldova.

“The European Union’s cooperation with the Republic of Moldova is based on the observance of the European values, while the rule of law is one of these values. When several persons attack the rule of law, these endanger all the benefits that the European Union wants to offer to the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, but the respect for the rule of law is a condition for providing macro-financial assistance,” said the MEP.

On April 23, the MPs of the Party of Socialists and the For Moldova platform revoked the Parliament’s decision by which Domnica Manole was appointed CC judge and named Boris Lupașcu in her place.

Siegfried Mureșan is the head of the European Parliament’s Delegation to the EU –Moldova Parliamentary Association Committee.
