Siegfried Muresan: EU must become involved, not only play a passive role

MEP Siegfried Muresan, who is a member of the EU – Moldova Delegation, welcomed the conclusions of the European Council on the Republic of Moldova adopted on Februarys 15, but considers that they are not sufficiently ambitious and the European Union should provide concrete support to the Moldovan authorities, not only play a passive role, IPN reports, quoting a press release of the MEP’s office.

“Since the political crisis came to an end in the Republic of Moldova, the European Union has constantly stated its support for the Moldovan authorities in the process of implementing the reforms stipulated in the Association Agreement and the Free Trade Agreement with the EU, but this is not enough. We must offer concrete support, not only play a passive role,” said the MEP.

As regards the bank frauds, Siegfried Muresan said the European Union must delegate experts in fighting tax fraud, tax evasion and money laundering to help the Moldovan authorities recover all the stolen money.

“I also think that the European Union must urgently send experts in all the areas in which the Republic of Moldova needs reforms so as to help the authorities work out plans of action and implement them. I speak here mainly about the justice system and the fight against corruption and the setting of clear, transparent and objective principles of selecting the administration of the Prosecutor General’s Office and of reexamining the prosecutor accountability and general immunity rules,” stated Siegfried Muresan.

The Council of the European Union on February 15 adopted a resolution on the Republic of Moldova whereby it underlined the necessity of hastening the implementation of the Moldova – EU Association Agenda.
