A ship that was sailing under Moldovan colors was captured by the Spanish authorities with 10,000 kg of hashish on board two days ago and is held in the Cartagena port. The Naval Agency of the Republic of Moldova said Moldova does not bear responsibility for the commercial activities carried out by the owners of ships sailing under its colors. Such offenses are committed by crew and ship-owners are mostly unaware of these, IPN reports.
Under international treaties on maritime transport, if crimes are committed aboard ships, the jurisdiction and legislation of the river state, port state or states under whose colors the ship sails or whose nationality the crew has are applied.
In this case, the ship was in the territorial waters of Spain and the legislation of this state will be thus applied. The Moldovan authorities provided the information requested by the Spanish antidrug authorities.
At national level, it was decided to struck the given ship off the State Register of Ships of the Republic of Moldova.
