Shevchuk denies reports of Russian military base in Transnistria
Transnistrian leader Yevgeny Shevchuk has denied reports regarding the dispatch of a Russian military base on the territory of Transnistria. The reaction came after several Russian media channels have shown information on changing the peacekeeping missions in Transnistria with the placement of a military base, reports Info-Prim Neo, citing www.olvia.idknet.com.
Yevgeny Shevchuk told “Ria Novosti” that the information on the Russian military base have come to the press from misinformed sources. He denied the fact that he had discussed with Russian Foreign Affairs Deputy Minister Grigory Karasin during the international scientific-experimental forum that was held in Tiraspol on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of peacekeeping troops’ stationing in the Security Zone.
“I believe that the main causes of the conflict were not exhausted; there are many contradictions, and the peacekeeping missions are the real force that is preventing the armed conflict between the two banks. Therefore, the peacekeeping mission is necessary, and we opt for the preservation of the current format. It should stay in the territory until a global political agreement has been reached, one that would engulf all security measures”, stated Shevchuk.
Recently, several media channels have published a series of messages claiming that along with the dispatch of a Russian military base in Transnistria the Russian Federation was offered the use of the airport that belonged to the former 14th army, as an exchange for Tiraspol’s request of financial support for “creating a security system”.
