Sheriff ousted from Europa League
Sheriff Tiraspol on Thursday, December 2, drew 1-1 with the Dutch club AZ Alkmaar in the next to the last game of the Europa Legue qualifying stage. As a result, both teams lost all chances to qualify for the next round, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The Moldovan champions looked more vigorous in the early minutes and Brazilian striker Jimmy Franca was very close to scoring the first goal on 7 minutes, but the guests' goalkeeper made a great save.
The Dutch had more luck on their first scoring opportunity, which transformed into a goal thanks to Holman. Timidly, Sheriff tried to equalize and eventually they managed to do it in the second half when Florent Rouamba stunned Alkmaar's goalie with a 25-meter kick. The goal animated Sheriff, yet they weren't able to score again.
This result places Sheriff at the bottom of the group.
Elsewhere in the group, Dynamo Kyiv beat 4-1 BATE Borisov. Nonetheless this result qualified both teams to the next round.
The last matches in Group E, though purely formal, will be played on December 15, between AZ and BATE, and Dynamo and Sheriff.
