Sheriff beaten by Switzerland's Basel
Sheriff Tiraspol were defeated 1-0 away by the Swiss team Basel in the first playoff match of the UEFA Champion League, Info-Prim Neo reports. Despite the defeat, Moldova's champion still has chances to qualify for the competition's groups.
The first half of the game was balanced, but the situation changed in the second half. The Swiss team opened the score through Stocker in the 54th minute. Russian Erohin and Montenegrin Djurovic had chances to equalize. The end of the match was thrilling. Erohin was sent off and the hosts were close to scoring the second goal, but Bulgarian goalkeeper Stoianov repealed Huggel's penalty.
The return match will be played in Tiraspol on August 24. If Sheriff suffer a defeat, they will continue to compete in the European cups, in the Europa League groups.
