Shelter providing temporary housing to foreigners to open in Chisinau

A shelter providing temporary housing to foreigners will be inaugurated in Chisinau. Parliamentary hearings on its creation were held on Wednesday, April 25 within the Parliamentary Committee for Human Rights, as well as on the finishing of the Accommodation Centre for the persons seeking asylum and for the recognised refugees, in partnership with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNCHR). According to the deputy minister of Internal Affairs, Sergiu Golovaci, the status of shelter was attributed to a number of administrative buildings of the Ministry of Internal Affairs located on Petricani Street in Chisinau. The reconstruction project of the Centre was approved by now. It will have an area of about 2 thousand metres and an accommodation capacity of about 150 persons. According to the deputy-minister, the maximum term of the project’s implementation is two years. Also, the Centre for the accommodation of persons seeking asylum and for the recognised refugees, who are staying in Moldova, also located in Chisinau, will be finished by 2009. The project is implemented by the Government with the support of UNCHR and TACIS Programme. Petrus Wijninga, the representative of UNCHR said that a study on the possibilities of integrating the refugees into the society will be launched in May. It will contribute to the implementation of the project. The inauguration of the Shelter is planned within the project “Strengthening of migration management in Moldova – MIGRAMOL”, launched on June 1, 2006 at the initiative of the Government with the support of the European Union and of the International Organisation for Migration, co-financed by the Government of Finland.
