Sexual harassment is ascertained more by women than men, study

Though it is not among the most often forms of discrimination, sexual harassment is reported by a considerable number of respondents, while 9.3% of these met with the given phenomenon on the street, IPN reports.

The gender barometer, conducted by the Center of Sociological Investigations and Marketing Research “CBS-AXA”, shows 57.5% of the respondents consider sexual harassment is the use of force to make someone have sex, 46% said this is threatening with the aim of having sexual relations, while 27% said this is indecent touching. The respondents were able to choose several answers simultaneously.

The problem is mainly realized by women and by respondents with a high level of education, from urban areas.

Even if the position of most of the respondents is that sexual harassment should be punished by law and that this phenomenon has negative effects on the professional life, 61.7% tend to blame the victim for this. The women are those who most often answered that the harassed persons provoked the harassers by their behavior or clothing.

The study also shows that only slightly over half of the persons who said they were victims of sexual horsemint said they know their rights.

The gender barometer “How do women and men take part in politics and decision-making processes?” was carried out within the UN Program “Women in Politics” that is implemented by UN WOMEN and UNDP in partnership with East Europe Foundation with the financial support of the Government of Sweden.
