Seventeen policemen were injured in the protest mounted in Chisinau on April 24. Five of these were admitted to the Ministry of the Interior’s Hospital, Minister of the Interior Alexandru Jizdan said in a press briefing. He also said that four vehicles were devastated, while the tires of two of the buses parked on Dimitrie Cantemir Blvd were cut, IPN reports.
Two civilians were also hurt following the use of teargas by the police. The minister noted that the police used this gas within the legal limits so as to calm things down. As to the young man who was arrested by the police, Alexandru Jizdan said there is evidence that this threw stones and hit a police officer. The press visited the hurt policemen who are in the hospital. After these receive treatment, they will be able to go home for Easter.
The minister stated that a criminal case was started over the public disorder caused on Bulgara St. There was created a working group that is investigating this case and will identify the persons who protested violently. The protest organizers will be invited to the police so as to discuss and determine their role in last Sunday’s events in Chisinau.
According to Alexandru Jizdan, during the protest the police protected all the buildings visited by the protesters. Measures continue to be taken to maintain public order and the people are urged not to yield to provocations.
Thousands of people from different regions of Moldova took part in an antigovernment protest organized by the Civic Platform “Dignity and Truth” in Chisinau on April 24. These demanded that the current government should resign and early parliamentary elections should be held simultaneously with the presidential elections. During the protest, the demonstrators surrounded the Government Building and then walked to Bulgara St, where the house of the first deputy chairman of the Democratic Party Vlad Plahotniuc is allegedly situated, and then to the Global Business Center, where Plahotniuc reportedly has his head office.
