Settlement of Transnistrian dispute depends on EU’s relations with Russia, Polish official
There are not many chances of resolving the Transnistrian conflict within the talks in the 5+2 format, chairman of the foreign policy commission of the Polish Seim Andrzej Halick said in the roundtable meeting “Priorities of the Polish Presidency of the EU Council”. He stated that the settlement of the Transnistrian dispute depends on the relations between the EU and Russia, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“I do not want to devise gloomy scenarios, but not all the decisions can be taken in Chisinau. In the talks in the 5+2 format, not all the cards are in Chisinau’s hands because there are things that cannot be solved by one person only. I don’t think that the solution to the conflict will be found in this format. It is a problem related to the relations between Europe and Russia,” said Andrzej Halick.
He also said that the Transnistrian dispute may be an impediment in the European integration process. “Moldova advances on the path to European integration, but the Transnistrian conflict is the most important problem in this process,” said the Polish official.
Andrzej Halick said the EU countries should make concerted effort to solve the given problem. “We, as Europeans, must be very active and speak in one, powerful voice with Russia. It will be a test of the relations between Russia and the EU. I think progress will be made in this sense because Moldova will not make headway if this issue is not dealt with,” he stressed.
It was earlier reported that Prime Minister Vlad Filat will have a meeting with the Transnistrian leader Igor Smirnov on the sidelines of a conference that will take place in Germany on September 8-9. Vlad Filat said the discussion between them will focus on the official talks in the 5+2 format. He voiced hope that they may be resumed in Moscow on September 22.
