Sergiu Toma wins silver at European Judo Championship

Moldova’s Sergiu Toma won the silver medal at the European Judo Championship in Turkey, on Friday, April 22. Toma amassed 5 wins in initial stages, but lost to Azerbaijan’s Elnur Mammadli in the final of the 81 kg category, Info-Prim Neo reports. The other Moldovan Judokas- Valeriu Duminica (81 kg), Vadim Bocan, Iurie Leu (both 73 kg) and Mariana Davidova (63 kg), were all eliminated in the first rounds. On Saturday, April 23, Moldova’s last two representatives, Ion Remarenco and Vasile Panfil (both 90 kg) will aim for silverware. 2011 is being highly successful for Moldovan athletes, who have brought at least one medal from every European competition. Ion Luchianov won the bronze at the European Athletics Championship. Nicolae Ceban and Natalia Budu obtained bronze medals and Ludmila Cristea silver in the wrestling contest. Oleg Sarghi became double European champion at weightlifting, Anatol Caracu- three times vice-champion and Ghenadie Dudoglo- bronze winner. An athlete and his coach will get 60,000 lei for a gold medal, 44,000 for silver and 30,000 for bronze. Overall, the Ministry of Youth and Sports will spend over 1 million lei for awarding the sportsmen and coaches.
