Sergiu Sîrbu: Violations committed by opposition parties are serious

Democratic MP Sergiu Sîrbu said the violations of the electoral legislation committed by the opposition parties, of which the Democratic Party (PDM) notified the institutions responsible for the organization of elections, are serious and put the political players in inequitable conditions. The issue was developed in the talk show “Reply” on Prime TV channel, IPN reports.

According to the MP, the financial violations can be now punished by confiscating the money and turning it into state budget revenues and by fining the administration of the party, while the party leader can be banned from holding an administrative post, including a political one. “The financial violations in the election campaign are evident and are severe, but not only in our country. The electoral contender can be removed from the race for these. There are also other penalties,” stated Sergiu Sîrbu.

Political analyst Corneliu Ciurea said he hasn’t yet seen serious violations of the legislation committed by the opposition. The opposition politicians are treated with indulgence by the power. The authorities were warned by Western factors to behave correctly and that they will be judged after February 24 for the way in which the elections are conducted. “The responsibility is borne by the power, not by the opposition. Our opposition is somehow irresponsible. It can provoke the power, can resort to actions to test the government’s patience. In such conditions, the government is in a delicate situation,” stated Corneliu Ciurea. According to him, if serious violations are committed and these are proven, punishment can be imposed.

Political commentator Vitali Catană said the problem is very difficult and the initiators of the notification should look at things not only from the perspective of a violation, but should also analyze the problem in a multidisciplinary context as it is a matter of hybrid war here.

Journalist Valeriu Reniță said the PDM’s notification will have effects if the Central Election Commissions has the freedom to treat this notice professionally. “It now depends on the bodies that should act and how promptly they act. I think this happens because the opposition understood the European Parliament’s resolution in an incorrect way and they believe those recommendations concerning the holding of free and fair elections are designed for the government only, not yet for them,” stated the journalist.

On December 7, the Democratic Party announced that it notified the institutions responsible for the organization of elections of violations of provisions of the Law on Political Party, the Election Code and the Broadcasting Code committed by parties and civic organizations. According to the PDM, these departures can negatively influence the electoral process.
