It is impossible to organize presidential elections within two months of the expiration of the tenure of the incumbent President, which is by May 24, Democratic MP Sergiu Sarbu stated in the talk show Fabrika on Publika TV channel, IPN reports.
“We cannot meet the time limit stipulated in the legislation. We will be unable to physically organize the elections by May 24. As the Constitutional Court decided that the head of state will be elected by the people, as earlier, we must amend the Election Code, the Law on the Election of the President and other legal acts. The parties must field candidates and campaign. The voters must also have time to know the candidates. There are also independent candidates who will need time to collect signatures for being included in the electoral race. I think holding the presidential elections in autumn will be more convenient,” stated the Democratic heavyweight.
Ex-judge of the Constitutional Court Nicolae Osmochescu stated a different opinion. “The timeframe of two months is stipulated in the amendments made to the Constitution in 2001. Earlier this period was three months. As the constitutional norm that existed before 2001 was restored, the timeframe is thus of three months. So, the presidential elections must take place by the end of June, despite the existing technical problems,” he said.
