Democratic MP Sergiu Sarbu categorically denies the alleged scenarios about the causing of a new conflict on the Nistru. According to him, the Government intends to peacefully resolve the dispute and to reunify the Republic of Moldova. There is a plan of action to his effect, but this has’ been made public yet, the MP stated in the public debate “Request to withdraw Russian troops from Moldova’s territory: legality, advantages, risks and dangers” that was staged by IPN News Agency.
Sergiu Sarbu said that on July 21 this year, by the statement calling on Russia to withdraw its troops from Transnistria, Moldova’s Parliament did nothing but reiterate the position of the governments that ruled after 1992. As one of the authors of this initiative, the MP noted the statement is political, but is based exclusively on a legal approach.
According to Sarbu, it is a legitimate request by the Moldovan authorities to unconditionally withdraw the Russian troops and munitions from the country’s territory that represent a constant threat to regional and even European security and stability. There was also made an absolutely legitimate call to modify the status of the peacekeeping mission from a military one into a civil one with an international mandate.
The MP noted that even if this statement was made with delay, the authorities should reassert this position every time or the memory of those killed in the Nistru war for defending the country’s integrity will be stained.
Sergiu Sarbu said the major goal of these and other actions taken by the current government is to ultimately bring this humiliation of the small state Moldova to an end. The current regime has more courage than the previous governments as this is the first official statement by which Parliament demands to withdraw the Russian troops and this is the first official request to the UN to include the Transnistrian issue in the agenda.
“We should stop begging for what belongs to us lawfully – respect for the country’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity. What risks can exist if we just remind our strategic partners of the fact that they assumed particular commitments? What problems can exist when we remind our strategic partners of the fact that they signed an agreement in 1992 and by this they pledged to gradually pull out their troops, that at the OSCE summit of 1999 they pledged to withdraw their troops from the territory of Transnistria?” asked the MP.
The public debate ”Request to withdraw Russian troops from Moldova’s territory: legality, advantages, risks and dangers” was the 76th installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture by public debates” that are staged with support from the Hanns Seidel Foundation of Germany.
