Sergiu Sarbu: Bill on information security will be minutely examined in Parliament

The bill to ensure information security and combat crimes involving the use of information technology will be thoroughly examined by the parliamentary commissions and in the legislature so as to obtain a good law, Democratic MP Sergiu Sarbu stated in the public debate “Real and nonexistent dangers to the basic human rights generated by the government’s intention to modify information technology regulations” that was staged by IPN News Agency and Radio Moldova.

The MP said civil society’s concerns will be minutely examined in concert with the bill authors, within the parliamentary commissions. “We are ready to debate the justified objections in Parliament, within the commissions. Together with the authors, we will make a synthesis so as to see if there are irregularities indeed and to remove these,” he stated.

According to Sergiu Sarbu, it’s not right for a bill that derives from the commitments assumed by the Association Agreement and by multiple conventions signed and ratified by Moldova, which is designed to combat cybercrime and protect the children from abuses, not to be passed because of technical aspects. “On the contrary, we should promote this bill and debate it in Parliament so that we obtain a good law,” he said.

The MP also said that Moldova must combat cybercrimes and protect the people from these. “The permanent legislation lags behind the developing social relations that we must address and the offenders will always be one step ahead of the legislation adopted by the authorities. Therefore, I think that this bill is more than beneficial,” stated Sergiu Sarbu.

The MP considers that this law will have an impact on the offenders and on those who intentionally or unintentionally allow their online platform to be used for committing particular crimes. “I hope we do not have and will not have such online platforms in Moldova. The users of information technology must be responsible for that content and must properly manage it,” he said.

The April 4 debate is the 52nd of the series of debates “Developing political culture by public debates” that are organized with the support of the German Foundation “Hanns Seidel”.
