The promotion of a law that would ban the propagation of homosexuality runs counter to the constitutional norms of a democratic state. The public persons who promote this initiative want to create themselves an image of defenders of the national values and to gain certain personal advantages, considers CReDO director Sergiu Ostaf.

In a news conference at IPN, Sergiu Ostaf said that implementing the examples of Russia and Ukraine, where a law banning the propagation of homosexuality was adopted, is against the European norms. Many persons in Moldova speculate on this subject in order to gain the position of true people of the nation. According to Ostaf, they try to extend the conservative-religious norms to the whole society and the secular notion of the state is not respected.

The director of the Resource Center for Human Rights (CReDO) said that by promoting a law banning the propagation of homosexuality they violate the European norms of formulating laws, as regards their predictability and concrete impact. Thus way, extreme relations are cultivated in society. These actions are aimed at directing the public opinion to problems that are not typical of our societies.

“There are persons whose sexual orientation is different from that of the heterosexuals and these persons have the right to self-determination. When they speak publicly about the violation of a number of rights, this is a democratic European value that cannot be constrained,” said the CReDO director.

Sergiu Ostaf underlined that the problem of sexual minorities is a sensitive issue because it affects the people’s private lives. For their part, the persons who promote conservative ideas against these persons are often in conflict with the law and want to create a platform of ascension in society, profiting from the lack of information and education as regards these subjects.
