Sergiu Ostaf: PDM’s candidate can go through to second round of presidential elections

The candidate of the Democratic Party (PDM) for the presidential elections will most probably go through to the second round of voting, where the struggle will be based on political criteria, Sergiu Ostaf, executive director of the Resource Center for Human Rights (CReDO), said in the talk show “Emphasis on today” on TVR Moldova channel, IPN reports.

Ostaf formulated three preconditions that the PDM must meet for their candidate to reach the second round of voting. “First of all, it is about the result of government. It is five months left until the presidential elections. If the government manages to achieve results, the PDM will secure at least 5-6% of the poll. Secondly, the PDM can secure the votes of particular categories of people, even if it resorts to populist actions. Thirdly, the PDM possesses serious administrative resources. I refer especially to the local public administration. The PDM has mayors in many settlements and it will thus gain a considerable number of votes,” he stated.

The CReDO director considers that the candidate of the PDM must be supported in the West and must be also loyal to Russia for being successful in the presidential elections.

Referring to Vlad Plahotniuc , Sergiu Ostaf said this could improve the situation in the country though he controls a number of state institutions. “We cannot deny the fact that different centers of economic interest, of which Vlad Plahotniuc forms part, influence some of the sectors. When a person assumes publicly a responsibility, political influence is needed. If Plahotniuc manages to transform this influence into political will, we will see the results in 5-6 months,” he stated.
