Sergiu Litvinenco about case of Dodon: It is a legal, not political case

The minister of justice denied the assertions of the Socialist opposition that accuses the government of televised justice in the case of Igor Dodon. Sergiu Litivinenco commended the prosecutors for their courage, saying that these act without receiving instructions from politicians. He demanded that all the procedures should be obeyed in the case of Dodon, saying the former President should benefit from the presumption of innocence until a final court judgment is passed, IPN reports.

Sergiu Litivineco denied any allusion that the government gave instructions over the case of ex-President Igor Dodon. According to the minister, the Prosecutor’s Office is free to start criminal cases against all those who are suspected of illegalities, even if these are politicians or decision makers.

“Regardless of the status of the person, if there are reasonable suspicions of offenses, this should be punished by observing all the guarantees. As far as I saw, the prosecutors have the necessary courage to go against all the persons suspected of illegalities. There is now no interdiction as regards criminal cases against politicians as it existed during the time of Stoianoglo. The Prosecutor’s Office does not synchronize its agenda with the agenda of the political class. The Prosecutor’s Office does not ask whether to start criminal cases against X or Y and when the arrest should be made. The prosecutors enjoy independence,” Sergiu Litvinenco stated in the program “Thursday with Liliana Barbăroșie” on the public TV channel.

The minister called on the law to obey all the procedures so that the case of Dodon is a correct one. If his blame is proven, he should be punished in accordance with the law.

“It is important to achieve an end result. It is important to avoid delays in the examination of cases by prosecutors and then by courts. For the credibility of the act of justice, the started criminal cases should be brought to an end. This is a legal, not political case. In the election campaign, we promised to the citizens to bring justice and we will do this. Regardless of the person’s status, if the blame is proven, the person should be convicted and have the property confiscated. Evidently, the procedures should be respected and the presumption of innocence should be obeyed until conviction. For the process to be credible, sufficient communication for the citizens should be ensured.  In the case of Dodon, the prosecutors communicated rather well,” stated the minister.

On Thursday, the Ciocana Court ordered to place Igor Dodon under house arrest for a period of 30 days. The former President is suspected of unjust enrichment, passive corruption, illegal party funding and treason.
