President Nicolae Timofti should nominate the candidate for Prime Minister proposed by the National Employers Confederation and the National Confederation of Trade Unions, secretary general of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Sergiu Coropceanu stated in the public debate: “The post of Prime Minister as a bone of contention. Why?”, which is the 48th installment of the series of debates “Development of political culture by public debates”, staged by IPN in partnership with Radio Moldova.
According to him, the discussions between the President and the political parties became harsh because the head of state made two big mistakes – he allowed to be influenced politically and raised the rank of party leader above the rank of a person holding important posts in the state. “This was done by including the party leaders in the composition of the Supreme Security Council. This was the first mistake. The second mistake was to stop the process of social dialogue. If the head of state would have continued the social dialogue, he could have had a candidate for Premier supported by the whole society,” stated Sergiu Coropceanu.
As to the solution that would help Moldova overcome the crisis, Sergiu Coropceanu said he would want a politically unaffiliated person who would be able to enforce the law to occupy the post of Premier. “As long as they insist on the idea that the candidate for Prime Minister should be designated by parties, this post is not attractive for a person with reputation and potential. It now depends on President Timofti if we remain a captive state or the government will work in accordance with the Constitution,” stated Coropceanu.
According to the secretary general of the PSD, the people of Moldova are witnesses to the usurpation of state power. “Only two-three persons – leaders of political parties – choose candidates for Speaker, Prime Minister, Prosecutor General, etc. By such actions, they defy the constitutional norms about the three powers in the state – legislative, executive and judicial. The conception of cooperation was replaced with that of subjugation,” he stated.
“President Timofti is now in the situation to decide not in the personal interest, but in society’s interest. If the head of state continues to yield to influence and accepts the rules of the game imposed by the party leaders, we risk pushing the Republic of Moldova into an abyss from where it will be hard to come out. The head of state must nominate a candidate that will be able to ensure the Cabinet’s independence.”
