Sergey Tarnovschi qualifies for Olympic Games

Canoeist Sergey Tarnovschi has qualified for the Tokyo Olympics. The 23-year-old athlete has won the 1,000 m canoe sprint at the last qualification tournament held in the Russian city of Barnaul, IPN reports.

Tarnovschi had a good start, but was behind Russian canoeist Ilia Shtokalov until close to the finish. The naturalized athlete made effort on the last 100 meters and scored a victory. Shtokalov ranked second and failed to qualify for the Olympic Games.

It will be the second participation in the Olympic Games for Sergey Tarnovschi. At the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, he won a bronze medal, but then failed the dope test. His result was annulled and the athlete was suspended for four years. Then, the medal was offered to Ilia Shtokalov.
