Sergei Stroenko perishes in road accident

Former captain of the national football team of Moldova and of Tiligul Tiraspol Sergei Stroenko died in a road accident on the Tiraspol – Odessa road on December 24. One more man was killed in the accident, while a woman was seriously hurt.

Sergei Stroenko, 46, played 46 matches for the national team, alongside his brother Andrei Stroenko. He won three times Moldova’s Cup, together with Tiligul Tiraspol, in 1993, 1994 and 1995.

This month, Sergei Stroenko became champion among veterans with the team Geotermal. He was the only national team player who was older than the coach. When he was 40, Stroenko played for Moldova in the match against Malta, in the 2008 European Championship preliminaries, together with Igor Dobrovolski as coach.

Sergei Stroenko also worked as a coach. He trained Academia and Zimbru.
