Security zone inhabitants demand removing peacekeeping post near Vadul lui Voda

Residents of Pirita, Cosnita, Dorotcaia and Pohrebea villages of Dubasari district picketed the trilateral peacekeeping post on January 2. They demanded that the Joint Control Commission and the Government should remove the peacekeeping post by the end of this week. Otherwise, they will take it away by their own forces and throw it into the Nistru. Anatol Croitor, a participant in the Nistru war, has told Info-Prim Neo that everybody is scared and alarmed. About 50 persons took part in today’s protest, but tomorrow they intend to stage a larger protest that will involve almost all the locals. “We can no longer endure. This is not the first time that such things happen. We want to know what the role of the peacekeeping post on the Nistru is. No attack has been made on the bridge located in Vadul lui Voda during 20 years. On the contrary, the peacekeepers did many foolish things. They evened shot each other,” said the man. As a result of the armed conflict of the spring-summer of 1992, Moldova and Russia signed an agreement concerning the principles of peacefully settling the conflict. One of the provisions envisioned the institution of a security zone with joint peacekeeping forces. Moldova pleads for replacing these posts with internationally-mandated civil forces. A Russian peacekeeper of the trilateral peacekeeping post No. 9 located on the bridge near Vadul lui Voda shot fatally a local who was driving a car. Vadim Pisari from Pirita died in the hospital shortly after he was shot.
