The Supreme Security Council convened today to discuss energy security, among other issues. President Igor Dodon told reporters the Council discussed in particular electricity imports and requested additional information about electricity supply from the Kuchurgan Power Station.

The Council also discussed the takeover of the power utility Union Fenosa by a new owner, and the leadership of the National Energy Regulatory Agency (ANRE) informed the Council about electricity and gas prices were formed. “Last year the government interfered in the price setting process and, for purely electoral reasons, gave some orders. Therefore, ANRE had to reduce the rates before the (legislative) elections,” stated Igor Dodon.

Also today, the Council discussed the allegations of large-scale smuggling schemes with amber, cigarettes and alcohol. Prosecutors and the SIS have been instructed to create joint task forces to investigate. “All the contraband schemes will be dismantled, none will remain under someone else’s protection. Our goal is to bring in more revenue to the State Budget,” stated the president.

Another important announcement made by Igor Dodon following the Security Council meeting is that the leadership of the Prosecutor General’s Office will likely be replaced.

Further, the Council requested information about the legal aspects of the Chisinau Arena project and the citizenship for investment scheme. The Ministry of Agriculture has been requested to clarify allegations about the illegal sale of Moldovan origin certificates for foreing foods.

Another subject discussed by the Security Council was the privatization of public property in Chisinau and the activity of monopolies.

Igor Dodon said all the information requested by the Council must be provided within 10 days, before it convenes again.
