Second stage of disposing and destroying obsolete and interdicted pesticide stocks to be launched on February 25

The second stage of disposing and destroying obsolete and interdicted pesticides under the Project “Persistent Organic Pollutants (PoPs) Stockpiles Management and Destruction” is to be launched on February 25 in Tudora village, Stefan Voda district, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communique of the Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry (ENRM.) Evacuating pesticides started in March 2007 at the district central store in Ratus village, Telenesti district. Subsequently, because of technical reasons, the works were cancelled for a 4-month period, the process being to resume on February 25. Obsolete and forbidden pesticide stocks from other 7 Moldovan districts will be transported to France. Given the funds allocated for such activities in the project, the pesticide stocks will initially be eliminated from the districts where the stores represent maximum risks for the people’s health and environment, because of their location and technical state. As additional funds will be found, the stocks from other districts will be evacuated. The activities of the project are part of Moldova’s actions carried with the support of the world community in order to fulfil the commitments this country assumed by ratifying the Stockholm Convention on persistent organic pollutants and of the National Plan on implementing the Convention, approved by the Government in 2004. The project is funded by the Global Environment Fund through the agency of the World Bank and by the Moldovan Government through the ENRM.
