Second European Water Solidarity Week taking place in Moldova
The second European Solidarity Week for Water is taking place in Moldova from October 1 through 5.
Both on this occasion and ahead of the UN’s International Year of Sanitation (2008), Moldova is hosting a forum themed “Proper sanitation for human development, economic and sustainable growth”. The goal of the forum is to intensify actions to make hygiene, sanitation and health become effective financial and political priorities.
The workshops, round tables and presentations taking place in Ivancea and Chisinau are attended by sixty experienced specialists, most of them from Central and Eastern Europe and Caucasus.
The objective of the second European Solidarity Week for Water is to assess the needs of the local communities for sewer systems, in particular in the rural areas in Central and Eastern Europe and in Caucasus. At the same time, the organisers plan to elaborate a reference system that could be applied locally to assist sustainable projects for sanitation improvement; establish connections between local, regional, national and international partners in order to bolster solidarity and encourage the required institutional changes Europewide.
The forum offers opportunity to highlight and strengthen the importance of the National Strategy for Water adopted by the Moldovan Government in July 2007, by encouraging comments from water consumers, authorities, civil society and donors.
The first European Solidarity Week for Water took place in Strasbourg in October 2005.
