Searches featuring customs and border police officers

Searches were carried out at customs posts on both sides of the Moldovan-Romanian border and these featured 14 border police officers and 11 customs officers who are suspected of asking €100 to €900 bribe, IPN reports.

The Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office said the searches were performed in concert with officers of the Internal Protection and Anticorruption Service and the anticorruption institutions of Romania.

Employees of the General Border Police Inspectorate and the Customs Service are suspected of asking and taking bribe for favoring the crossing of goods without customs checks or with superficial checks.

With the assistance of agents under cover who worked during over a year, more than 100 acts of corruption were documented.  On Tuesday, searches were carried out at the homes and offices of the suspects, who were summoned to the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office.

Passive corruption carries a jail term of three to seven years or a fine of 200,000 to 300,000 lei and with ban on holding particular posts or performing a particular activity for a period of five to ten years.
