SDP suggests to support a common opposition candidate for bascan of Gagauzia
The Social Democracy Party addressed several political parties from the Republic of Moldova a proposal to support a common candidate for the office of bascan of Gagauzia, „to put an end to the communist domination in the region”, the leader of the party, Dumitru Braghis, declared during a press conference.
According to Braghis, this candidate must match several criteria: it must be a democratic person and must promote democratic values; he must assure the continuous cooperation between Chisinau and Comrat and must not be affiliated with any political party. The SDP leader mentioned it is necessary that this candidate is well known personality in the region, but didn’t mention any names, as it could damage the election campaign of this person.
According to Braghis, the idea to promote a common candidate is also fueled by the intention to break “the well-known practice to create new political parties in order to fortify own positions and to disperse the democratic vote”.
The Gagauzia election will take place on December 3. At present, the office of bascan is held by Gheorghe Tabunsic, who supports and is supported by the communist authorities. The communist party had serious support from the UTA Gagauz-Yeri electorate in the parliamentary elections from 2001, but in 2005 they were voted by 30% of the electorate – the smallest result obtained by the communist party at these elections.
The most well-known opposition political party from Gagauzia is „Edinaia Gagauzia”, led by Mihail Furmuzal.
