The Superior Council of Prosecutors (SCP) rejected for the second time the candidacy of Victor Kylchik for the post of chief prosecutor of the Prosecutor’s Office of the Autonomous Territorial Unity of Gagauzia. The candidate was repeatedly proposed by the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia, IPN reports.
SCP president Angela Motuzoc said that this is the second stage of the contest to choose a candidate for chief prosecutor of Gagauzia. In the meeting, members of the Council put a number of questions to the candidate who took part in the meeting through videoconferencing. Later, the SCP members had deliberations and the decision to reject candidate Victor Kylchik was ultimately announced.
Earlier, Victor Kylchik held the post of chief prosecutor of the Prosecutor’s Office of Gagauzia after he was designated in June 2020 by order of the then prosecutor general Alexandr Stoianoglo. In December 2021, the SCP named Nicolae Levandovschi, who served as chief prosecutor of the Basarabeasca Prosecutor’s Office, as acting chief prosecutor of Gagauzia.
Under the law, the candidate for the chief prosecutor of the Prosecutor’s Office of the Autonomous Territorial Unity of Gagauzia is proposed by the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia to the Superior Council of Prosecutors for verification. If violations are identified in the procedure for selecting the candidate or his doesn’t meet particular conditions or criteria, the SCP rejects the candidate suggested by the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia. The Assembly can propose again the same candidate by the votes of 2/3 of its members. If procedural violations or noncompliance with particular conditions or criteria are ascertained again, the SCP can reject again the candidate. The candidate rejected the second time can no longer be proposed for chief prosecutor of Gagauzia and a new contest is to be staged.
