SCP comes together to choose candidate for acting prosecutor general

The Superior Council of Prosecutors will hold a meeting today to select a candidate for acting prosecutor general, as the law on the prosecution service provides. The decision was taken by the members of the Council after a quorum could not be secured on Tuesday evening to examine the issue, IPN reports, with reference to Minister of Justice Sergiu Litvinenco.

“We ascertained that we do not have a quorum. There were seven persons and we therefore convened a meeting of the Council for Wednesday, 10am. At 8am, someone from the Council who works on a permanent basis will file an official application to the Council’s staff and will ask to invite the other Council members,” Sergiu Litvinenco stated for the press.

The minister noted that in the evening of October 5, they exchanged opinions about the person who can occupy the post of acting prosecutor general, but he cannot provide details as his mates didn’t give their consent.

The necessity of calling a meeting of the Superior Council of Prosecutors appeared after a criminal case was started against Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo on four counts, namely abuse of power, misconduct in office, passive corruption and falsehood.  Searches were carried out in his office and the prosecutor general was later arrested for 72 hours.

Even if the law provides that the Superior Council of Prosecutors is convoked in five days of the occurrence of such a situation, an extraordinary meeting needs to be convened immediately so as to select an acting prosecutor general that will be confirmed by the President.
