The Superior Council of Magistracy hasn’t held any meeting since June 15. The last attempt to convoke the Council after a pause of two months was made on August 17, but the meeting could not be held as a quorum was not present. A new meeting wasn’t called.
Contacted by IPN for a comment, spokeswoman for the Council Valeria Plămădeală said a SCM meeting hasn’t been set. Some of the members are on annual leave and a quorum cannot be ensured. Also, the last week of August included the mini-vacation of August 27-31.
The agenda of the August 17 meeting included 44 items. The Council was to examine the resignations tendered by judge Ion Muruianu, of the Chisinau Appeals Court, and judge Oleg Ciumaș, of the Bălți Court, and also the appeals against the Disciplinary Board’s decisions concerning a number of judges, and the Constitutional Court’s notice regard the establishment of the constitutionality of legal provisions concerning reasons for dismissing judges.
The contest to fill the post of Constitutional Court judge, which fell vacant at end-January, hasn’t been yet held. The deadline for submissions was August 12 and 11 persons applied to the post of constitutional judge by this time limit.
