SCM meeting to examine resignation of judge trying case of Shor put off

The Superior Council of Magistracy (SCM) was to examine the resignation tended by judge Nina Veleva of the Cahul Appeals Court on December 1. The judge forms part of the panel of judges who are trying the case of Shor, IPN reports.

In a news conference, Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo, who is an ex-officio member of the SCM, said the meeting could not take place as a quorum was not present. Someone of the SCM members got ill.

As to the hearings in the case of Shor held at the Cahul Appeals Court, Alexandr Stoianoglo said no hearing was postponed because of the prosecutors. It happened on the initiative of lawyers. “Regrettably, there are concerted actions on the part of lawyers and justice bodies over the investigation into the billion theft. This is a challenge for the whole justice system of the Republic of Moldova,” stated the prosecutor general. According to him, Ilan Shor and persons close to him are investigated.

A new hearing in the Shor case at the Cahul Appeals Court was scheduled for December 4.
