SCM condemns threats against judicial system, statement

The Superior Council of Magistracy (SCM) condemns any threat and pressure against the judicial system and its representatives and calls on the responsible institutions to show vigilance so as to combat and prevent the threats and attempts to exert pressure on the judiciary. A statement to this effect wads approved in the SCM’s meeting following the assertions made by Ilan Shor, who was sentenced to 15 years in jail, following the passing of judgment, IPN reports.

“The Superior Council of Magistracy dismisses the affirmations made by convict Ilan Shor as threats against the three judges who passed the sentence as inacceptable in a state with the rule of law,” runs the statement.

The Council encourages the three judges who took the decision concerning Ilan Shor to inform the SCM and the Prosecutor’s Office about any threat, direct or indirect pressure exerted by Ilan Shor or his representatives and assures that it will take all the necessary measures to ensure the independence and security of the judges who are intimidated.

On April 13, 2023, fugitive MP Ilan Shor was sentenced to 15 years behind bars in the billion dollar bank fraud case. By this definitive decision, the Chisinau Appeals Court banned him from holding posts in the banking sector for a period of five years and ordered to levy a sum of 5.2 billion lei on the politician. The sentence will be challenged in the Supreme Court of Justice within 30 days.

The same day, Ilan Shor came with a reaction on social media, asserting that the Appeals Court’s decision is illegal, taken under pressure and in breach of all the legal provisions and he does not intend to comply with it. He expressed his conviction that the court’s judgment will be annulled the next day after the PAS government is replaced.
