SCM attempts to come together for new meeting

The Superior Council of Magistracy (SCM) is trying again to have a meeting after it hasn’t met since mid-June, while the last attempt made in August failed owing to the absence of a quorum. A new meeting was set for September 7, IPN reports.

The agenda of the August 17 meeting included 44 items, but the agenda of the September 7 meeting consists of only 19 items. The first three items are the resignations tendered by judge Ion Muruianu, of the Chisinau Appeals Court, judge Oleg Ciumaș, of the Bălți Court, and judge Mihail Macar, of the Hâncești Court.

The Superior Council of Magistracy hasn’t held any meeting since June 15. The last attempt to convoke the Council after a pause of two months was made on August 17, but the meeting could not be held as a quorum was not present. Spokeswoman for the Council Valeria Plămădeală said some of the members are on annual leave and a quorum cannot be ensured.

The contest to fill the post of Constitutional Court judge, which fell vacant at end-January, hasn’t been yet held. The deadline for submissions was August 12 and 11 persons applied to the post of constitutional judge by this time limit.
