After a number of attempts, the Superior Council of Magistracy (SCM) on January 26 approved the resignation tendered by judge Nina Veleva, of the Cahul Appeals Court. The judge forms part of the panel of judges who are examining the Shor case, being also a rapporteur on this case, IPN reports.
SCM member Petru Moraru, rapporteur, said the judge handed over her resignation last November and this was the Council’s fourth attempt to examine it.
By her application, the judge asked to endorse her honorable leaving, but not all the SCM members voted in favor.
“By ten votes of the attending members in favor, the SCM decided to accept the resignation tendered by judge Nina Veleva, of the Cahul Appeals Court. The President of the Republic of Moldova is asked to dismiss Missis Nina Veleva from the post of judge of the Cahul Appeals Court based on Article 25, para. 1, letter a of the Law on the Status of Judge. The relevant draft decree will be submitted. The decision can be challenged in the Cahul Appeals Court within 30 days,” said the acting chairwoman of the SCM Luiza Gafton.
The case against the ex-president of the Administration Board of Banca de Economii Ilan Shor was transferred to the Cahul Appeals Court in February 2018. Since them, the set hearings have been put off for different reasons. The last postponed hearing was that scheduled for January 22. The lawyers requested again to replace the judges. The previous such requests were rejected. The next hearing was arranged for January 27, 9am.
