Depositors of the Savings Bank born before 1943, who submitted applications by July 31, 2007, can get indexation at the first stage at the Savings Bank as from August 20, 2007. The declaration was made by the Moldovan Government’s central commission on indexation of deposits made by citizens under the law of December 12, 2002 regarding “the indexation of deposits made by citizens in the Savings Bank” and the Government’s Decision No. 275 of March 13, 2007. At the same time, the commission informs that it starts accepting applications from the depositors of the “Savings Bank” born before 1951 to include them in the 2008 list of beneficiaries of indexation. The applications can be submitted to any branch of the Savings Bank, between August 20 and December 31, 2007. At the first stage, depositors will get 1000 lei each at a ratio of 1 leu: 1 soviet ruble. The rest of the amounts will be indexed at a ratio of 1: 2.5, but only after all the depositors that held accounts in Sberbank before 1992 receive the first indexed thousand rubles. In 2006, the Bank indexed the deposits made by citizens born before 1940. A sum of 65 million lei (5 million USD) was earmarked in the budget for this purpose. The 2007 budget law includes 85 million lei (6.5 million USD) for deposit indexation. The sum required to index all the population’s deposits in rubles at the Savings Bank exceeds 1.7 billion lei (136.3 million USD). Early in 1992, the Bank registered 1.98 million deposit accounts, in which 4.13 billion rubles was kept.
