Savings Bank invites depositors born before 1954 to submit requests for indexation
The Moldovan Government’s central commission for indexation of deposit accounts held by individuals invites the depositors of the Savings Bank (Banca de Economii) born before 1954, inclusive, to file applications for indexation until 1 March 2008 at any outlet of the bank in order to be included in the 2008 recipient list, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The depositors born before 1951, inclusive, who filed applications until 30 November 2007 could receive from the Savings Bank their first-stage indexed savings in the period December 15-29.
In the period August 20 – November 30, the Savings Bank registered about 33,700 applications submitted by depositors born between 1948 and 1951, the amount payable being 31.6 million lei. The payment of the first-stage indexed savings to these depositors wasn’t scheduled for 2007. However the number of depositors born before 1947, who were supposed to request indexation last year, was lower than expected. The amount payable to depositors born before 1947 added up to 54.9 million lei, which is 64.6 percent of the sum planned by the Government.
At the first stage, depositors will get 1000 lei each at a ratio of 1 leu: 1 soviet rouble. The remaining sum on the deposit accounts will be indexed at a ratio of 1: 2.5, but only after all the depositors that held accounts in Sberbank before 1992 receive the first indexed thousand roubles.
After the Moldovan leu was put into circulation on November 29, 1993 and the prices underwent liberalisation, the population’s savings decreased in value by over 1,000 times.
