Repair works on a 93 kilometers long segment of the national road M2 between Sarateni and Soroca start today and are expected to take 24 months to complete, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The rehabilitation will be done by one Austrian and two Turkish companies. The Millennium Challenge Account Moldova (MCA Moldova) selected two other foreign companies to supervise the work. The total cost of the project is $92.7 million.
Ana Racu, MCA Moldova outreach officer said the Turkish companies “ONUR Taahhnut Tasimacilik Ve Ticaret Ltd. Sti.” and “SUMMA Turizm Yatirimciliği A. ş.” will rehabilitate a 44.9 km long segment starting from Sarateni junction to the entrance to Ghindesti town. The Austrian company “Strabag AG” will rehabilitate the remaining 48.1 kilometers, taking it from Ghindesti to Drochia junction. This company has previously been involved in other Moldovan road work projects as well.
The Sarateni-Soroca road is an important link between Moldova and Ukraine for passenger and cargo traffic. A two-lane paved road, it has fallen into an advanced state of deterioration, with roughly 60% of the surface requiring replacement.
According to MCA Moldova, the rehabilitation of the road will increase the incomes of the local population by reducing costs of transport, goods and services; reduce the losses to the national economy caused by the bad condition of roads and the number of road accidents through improved traffic conditions.
